Coffee Shop Conversations – And Connections

From Dr. Kim Freeze, SOIH’s Ecosystem Steward:
“One morning, as I worked at a coffee shop in Medford, I found myself talking with a fellow entrepreneur about 1Million Cups (1MC)—the event that the SOIH hosts in the Rogue Valley to support local startups and small businesses. As we chatted about the value of 1MC, I noticed a few people at nearby tables listening in. It wasn’t long before they joined our conversation, sharing their own experiences and ideas about entrepreneurship.

“Across the shop, I overheard a group at another table discussing their startup challenges. I couldn’t resist inviting them to learn more about our Innovation Hub and, of course, to join us at our next 1MC event in Grants Pass (at the Hivve). As the conversation continued, a small circle of curious people gathered, creating an impromptu networking session right there in the coffee shop!

“To my surprise and delight, the very next day, several people from that spontaneous coffee shop conversation showed up at the 1MC event! They brought fresh perspectives, new energy, and even more stories about their entrepreneurial journeys. It was a reminder of the power of community and conversation, and how a single casual interaction can spark connections that bring new faces and ideas to our regional innovation ecosystem.”
